John would have been 71 years old today. Please keep him in your hearts and spend some time today thinking of him. |

I had gotten out my 'Ragged but Right" vinyl album the other day cause I couldn't think of anything else I could stand listening to. I hadn't really listened to it carefully since about '66. Sammy Bush, who was 15 at the time borrowed it for about a month cause he liked Rinzler's mandolin. I studied John's guitar parts.
On relistening, 45 years later, having smoked, I couldn't believe the musicianship. Surely this was the highwater mark of ALL Bluegrass. I am so sorry John Herald died the way he did. He has always been a hero, and though I never met him, I love him. |

Hi Folks,
this is Steve Stiert, the webmaster for JohnHerald.com. Just want to everyone know that if you have any audio, video, or photos of John that would be of interest to others, I'd be happy to post it on this site.

John,
Great post. Sadly, the truth in John's lyrics in 'Moneyland,' and 'Martha- The Last Passenger Pigeon,' seem to be growing more and more true as time goes by.
John, you have done much to keep John Herald's music played. Your show, "Music You Can Hear one the Radio," is a favorite not only for the John Herald songs you often feature but also for the other artists you play.
Wouldn't it be great if some of John's friends who come to this site could contact you and add to your collection of John's recordings and live shows. I'd love to hear some live recordings of the Woodstock Moutains Revue.
Keep up the great work and thanks for the info regarding Del McCoury and 'Moneyland.' |

July 26, 2010
Ever since I first heard them sing it on A Prairie Home Companion, I’ve been wondering how it came to be that the Del McCoury Band learned John's song, "Moneyland" and made it the title for the 2008 album they put together with Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brien and others. Last month when I heard the band at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, I got a chance to find out.
John had included the song on Just Another Bluegrass Boy, the album he completed just days before he took his life five years ago. If you’re in this guestbook, you probably already know the song as a powerful indictment of the ever-widening gulf between the rich and the poor and also, given John’s financial situation, as an extremely poignant one.
It's not as if the Del McCoury recording would have made John rich, but he sure would have loved it. It would have been the kind of validation he had rarely received in recent decades. Maybe it would have led to more prominent and lucrative bookings. Maybe it would have led others to also pick up a John Herald song or two. Maybe it would have given him the strength and resources to embrace life for a while longer.
When I introduced myself to Del and asked about the song, he told me it had been sent to him by Artie Traum, to whom John had given custody of his work. He lamented that he had never met John or seen him in concert and also that, only three years after John's death, Artie himself had died of liver cancer.
Del readily agreed to sign my copy of John Herald's final CD which I had carried with me to the festival. I wasn't quite sure why I asked but as I look at the signature now, I hope it helps to do for John the one kind favor Blind Lemon Jefferson asked of seeing that his grave is kept clean.
I’ve posted a photo of the signed album notes at http://veryseldom.com/JohnHerald.php.

Sorry for the mistake in dates, John left us on July 18th. Way too soon. I was very touched by Kim's note. |

Yesterday marked five years since John left us. You are missed so much and loved even more. You'll always be "My Johnny Boy" |

I think of you often and remember the good times we had. I believe it will be a great mushroom year with all of the humid hot days upon us and wonder if you will find a way to the woods you loved to wander in. I wish life could have been kinder to you. |

The CD is out and was re-titled "Outside Looking In" which is the name of the title cut about John. "Maverick Road" was one of the working titles for the CD as was "I Came Back".
The CD is available on my website or Amazon or CD Baby. www.charleslyonhart.com
I am sure that you will enjoy it! |

Funny that you say that. I miss his laugh too.
He did have a great laugh and I loved to see him smile.

My new CD, "Outside Looking In" is finally out. Two and a half years in the making the CD is dedicated to John and has a few pictures of John in the booklet that accompanies the package.
The title song, "Outside Looking In" is about John. The band includes George Quinn who played with John for over 30 years, Chris Zaloom, Larry Packer and Dennis Cotton. All friends of John who worked with him at one time or another.
I still miss John so very much. I wish that John could hear the CD but I am sure that he is listening somewhere and looking down and smiling. If any of you are interested in hearing the CD you can go to my webiste www.charleslyonhart.com and obtain a copy.
I think of John most at this time of the year since we usually spent a good part of the Holidays together. John...I love you and still miss you very much.

In 1964 and lots of us were listening to folk music. Very popular then. Several of us loved and still do Ian and Sylvia. Their tale of some young Canadian desperadoes was and remains my favorite. When we first heard it, all us pathetic guitar novices were totally electrified by the lead guitarist: John Herald. It was clear from this and so much more his astonishing flat picking was not being done from reading a music sheet, either.
So, decades later, an old man now, I am watching the video of him singing and yodeling "Ruby". Yes, I know Doc Watson is probably without comparison and blind to boot, but John's picking then, so many years later, was again: electrifying. And watching all these old videos, my esp tells me he was a man of great inner kindness. RIP. |

Tomorrow September 6th would have been John's 70th birthday. Please spend a silent moment just to remember this beautiful man. |
